Greece: No denouement, just more misery on the way

Don Hank

The news of Greece’s poll results, widely construed as a decision not to immediately exit the euro, is all over the foreign cable news programs, and Brussels is shouting for joy. They fail to see what’s coming! The markets responded favorably for a little over an hour, than plunged again when people woke up to reality: Endless bailouts for Greece until Germany and the others go bust.

To give you some perspective, here are some figures on the contributions of the various member countries to the EU, and hence to the bailouts:

http://www.redicecreations.com/article.php?id=7925

Briefly, at the time of that report, Belgium’s Flanders paid top euro per capita, 282.6 euros per Flemish person, for a total of 1 billion 780 thousand euros.

But it is widely believed that Belgium will soon need a bailout of its own. That’s a double whammy for the EU. Not only would it lose the net contribution from Belgium but it would also have to take more from the remaining countries that are just barely above water to pay the Belgians. A net loss instead of the current net contribution.

Italy contributed 2 billion 938 million at the time of that writing, or about 49.7 euros per capita.

But Italy will eventually need a bailout, despite the phony optimism of Super Mario Monti.

That is another loss of a contributor, which becomes a net liability for the EU.

Spain will also need another bailout, and so will Greece.

And the more needy countries line up at the trough and stop being net contributors, the harder it will be for those few economically sound nations to pull their weight. Further, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the German powerhouse, is demanding — and will eventually get — full-scale “green” energy to replace all of the traditional cheap nuclear and fossil fuel plants that have so far made Germany the no. 2 exporter in the world. Once this transformation is complete, Germany too will line up at the trough, but the trough will be empty by then.

It may seem as if the EU has spun out of control. But the founders of the EU were men imbued with the socialist vision. Their idea from the start was that the rich nations should pull the weight of the poor, ignoring the vast difference in work ethic between them that drives some to work while others consume the fruits of their labor. This is socialism in drag, since in traditional socialism, there is roughly a wealth transfer of rich individuals to poor individuals, while in the more sophisticated version, the transfer is from rich nations to poor nations. You’d think Europe would have noticed, after all these years of being duped, that the EU is just a sophisticated version of the Soviet Union, but it is as if someone had taped their eyes shut. As time goes on it becomes increasingly clear that this transfer was never intended to be temporary. It has been a de facto systemic state of wealth transfer, always propped up with a new crisis and hence a new pretext to prolong the outright daylight robbery.

Thus, as long as the EU’s power masters can continue to strike fear in the hearts of the serfs who do their bidding, they will continue to steal the wealth of the rich nations, whose workers work longer hours with less pay, and send it to the “poor” nations, whose workers work less, retire earlier and demand — and get — more of everything. Meanwhile, the only win-win group is the bankers. Italy, for example, recently paid a handsome 7% for its credit. Good money for folks who sit like vultures at a carrion feast.

Socialism hasn’t changed one iota in its gross unfairness to the productive. But it has changed its guise and has trained its propaganda machines full tilt against the working men and women of nations unfortunate enough to be “rich,” warning that if their plan is not followed, there will be chaos, tanks in the streets, starvation, rioting, war, etc. So keep your noses to the grindstone. Arbeit macht frei.

Yet, these dread social phenomena are precisely what the EU and its policies are leading to. But they are the unintended consequences, and as stealthy and crafty as the EU power masters are, they have no good moves left for this end game, because the final outcome belongs to God, not to them.

Just as the populace didn’t see their machinations, the power masters didn’t see Him at work.

The EU wants unlimited fines for Christian speech

EU targets Christianity and free speech

I have sometimes heard American conservatives say that what happens in other parts of the world is of no consequence to us. They get impatient with those of us who look at what is happening in Europe and say “well, they made their bed. Now they must lie in it.”

While it is true that our founders spoke against “entangling alliances” and we should have avoided such a long time ago, the fact remains that the US and Europe are virtually joined at the hip thanks to the alliances our past leaders have established. And thanks in no small part to the blindness of voters in the last presidential election.

Thus we see the European Union poised to destroy Christian speech in what appears to be an imitation of the ACLU this side of the Atlantic. But it is not. Though no monolith, the Left eyes the same ends everywhere. The Fabian Socialists in the UK (Tony Blair was a prominent one) and the Frankfurt School from Germany (now firmly implanted in the US) have the same end: eradicate our culture and replace it with a leftist one in which a self-elected Big Brother decides what we may and may not say and do.

Why should I care what happens in Europe, you say?

The EU is using the same tactics to achieve its ends and has the same goals as our Left. That goal is a one-world leftist government.

Therefore, what happens in Europe will happen here if it has not already, so at the very least, it is a barometer. But worse, the EU is already extending its tentacles to other places. There have been proposals within the EU to widen its reach to Africa and the Middle East. Turkish membership is already being discussed.

And German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries has already called for German control of the internet and the adoption of the German legal system throughout the world. In case you didn’t know, German courts and legislators have all but banned home schooling and have banned “hate” speech on the internet and in public. A pastor was jailed there for preaching an anti-abortion sermon. Frau Zypries has said she wants us to follow suit. Sweden seems to be perfectly  willing.

Anyone daring to say current politicians in Germany are like nazis is violating the law prohibiting the “trivializing of the holocaust.” So if you think the nazilike politicians are nazilike, better keep it to yourself. (I won’t travel to Germany and I believe a travel boycott is warranted. Maybe that is a subject for another post).

At some point, American leftists will make a bid for one-world government, something that US presidents of both parties, now including Obama, and the EU, the UN and the IMF have been quietly working toward for years, including a worldwide currency to replace the dollar.

The Obama government has said it does not want a good crisis to go to waste. Clearly, both parties, which have long been in the hands of one-world advocates (most presidents have been Council on Foreign Relations members, who are indoctrinated to believe that a one-world government is inevitable and desirable for world peace), and the goal will be the same as in the EU.

The EU started out as an economic entity too, supposedly concerned only with creating a giant market place where goods could travel freely, unfettered by trade barriers.

But from the very outset, this economic focus was only part of a bait and switch scheme. The bait is now gone and the switch is in place. The EU now is telling courts and legislatures all over Europe what they can and must do, and as you will read below, the results are a bit on the totalitarian side. This brings us to another implication for the US: beware multinational efforts like NAFTA.

Ireland was a holdout for years, having voted No in a referendum. But the EU insiders pretended to make a few changes to mollify the Irish and called for a new referendum so that the Irish could vote Yes on the supposedly“new”Lisbon Treaty concerning a EU constitution. But the Irish were duped. The “changes” were minimal to non-existent, but the actual document – though hyped by the elite — was more inaccessible to voters than the Health Care bill was to the US public.

And did you notice something?: If Ireland got to vote twice, shouldn’t the other member nations get that opportunity?

Of course. The fact that they don’t is clear evidence that this is pure snake oil.

There is nothing even remotely democratic about having nay voters vote again and again until the elites get the result they want but not allowing yea voters to do the same. Further, groups in the UK and Germany are saying it was illegal. The EU apparently illegally invested public monies from the member states in promoting the Yes vote in Ireland. And Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the EU Commission, also went to Ireland on the tax payers’ dime, in violation of the EU’s own rules. This was supposed to be an internal affair but the unsuspecting Irish were dragged into it by a foreign power.

The only holdout today is Czech President Vaclav Klaus, one of the most brilliant men in Europe, who sees through the hype but is being pressured by the EU and member countries to sign the Lisbon treaty.

All of the above-described shenanigans reflect the way Obamacare is being rammed down our throats.

What does the EU teach us?

I think the main lesson is that the Fabian socialists are winning the world through stealth. They are, de facto, achieving their ends of world domination by “democratic” means. How did they do it? The churches went along, the Vatican went along, the “conservative” politicians went along, and now they are dragging the people along behind them. And many of the people are still under the delusion that this is all to their benefit. But a growing number smell a rat.

And note something curious:
While the EU, like American Democrats and RINOs, are using the “gay” issues like gay marriage, and immigrants of the Muslim faith to gin up sympathy for “victim” groups and thereby develop an artificial pretext for their anti-Christian schemes,
ironically, Russia, once the bastion of the Left, is not having any of this and hardly goes along with any of the EU’s schemes.

A few years back, the mayor of Moscow banned a proposed “gay” parade and made a few arrests when a few hardy souls decided to stage it anyway.

And about a year ago, the Russian Orthodox Prelate made a speech before the EU and told them that Europe lacks morality. He also complained to EU Commission President Barroso of Christian persecution in Europe.

If the mad rush to self destruction can’t be stopped from within, our traditional enemy may become an ally at some point and may become the last holdout for traditional Christianity.

And the first shall be last and the last shall be first.

The EU wants unlimited fines for Christian speech

By Graham Wood

I am writing today in regard to the latest example of proposed legislation, which can only be described as horrific, which will be coming forward.   Needless to say it is an EU “directive”.

What is a directive?

A directive emanating from the EU must pass into legislation in an EU member state, although there is some freedom to adapt to national culture and circumstances. Note, however, that such is the sheer scale of EU legislation, not to mention its complexity of language (bureaucratic legalese) that the vast amount is not even known about by our MPs [Members of Parliament], let alone finding time or opportunity to debate in our House of Commons.
When you read this you will know just how far we have travelled down the road to totalitarianism, and a return to the crudities of religious (Christian) persecution associated with former times (the absolutism of the Stuart Kings and the notorious Star Chamber).  It is proposed (I quote from a small Christian newspaper):

“The provisions are simply appalling, so appalling that most people will not believe what we say until it is too late.  The aim seems to be the destruction of our Christian culture and the removal of any right for free speech on Christian matters.
Of course, it affects other religions, but somehow we doubt whether Moslems and atheists will get the same rough treatment [GW: You bet they won’t – it’s aimed at Christians – and in reality through them, an expression of hatred towards the Saviour].
Basically, if in the province of any service, that is, any public gathering or building or employment terms, you say or do something that another person claims to be offended by, then it is up to you, not the offended party (complainant), to prove that they are not offended.  Should you fail to prove this negative to the court’s satisfaction you are liable to pay compensation to which no upper limit is fixed!
All sorts of people can be affected, not just hoteliers, landlords, (almost anyone involved in a public ‘service’), and it could include publishing houses, schools, universities, preachers, doctors, lawyers, and almost any aspect of media transmission.
According to the Christian Institute: “The proposals explanatory notes make it clear that churches will be forced to consider practising homosexuals for youth worker posts, and similar roles if these become law.”

But the implications are far wider than this one example — for the proposals are so loose and vague in definition that it could be a ‘catch all’ for almost anything whereby somebody could claim to be “offended”
This is dangerous in and of itself as you will know, but it has other severe possible repercussions, for it reverses the historic principle of the presumption of innocence until proved guilty, would be a draconian inhibition of free speech and expression, and freedom of association.
(All in theory protected under our own Constitution and Bill of Rights and later Human Rights Act with which they come into conflict)
Let me give you an example of this heinous “law” in action.

Under existing “Equality” law:
A Christian couple, owners of a small hotel in the UK, had an open discussion in their own premises, a private conversation, with a Muslim guest. The discussion ranged over Mohammed, the person of Christ etc.  The guest left the hotel and later “reported” the conversation to the police, and they in turn charged the couple with a crime (not yet known) because they defended their faith and criticised Islam).
It is extremely unlikely that the charge will be continued or the couple taken to court, but of course the damage has been done. It is the intimidating nature of these laws that will “chill” free speech in almost any context.
Why “unlimited fines,” reserved usually for serious crimes such as robbery, violence, etc? Clearly there is a harsh vindictive determination on the part of the EU and our government to crush any Christian witness in the public square.  (Acts 4 comes to mind “Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God – judge ye….”).
Two fine Christian organisations in the UK work tirelessly to defend such cases as above – The Christian Institute, and Christian Concern for the Nation. Both need our prayers and support.
It is no exaggeration to say, as CCFON states, that “This is a recipe for cultural genocide”

President Klaus has since caved in to enormous pressure and signed. Russians warn US against socialism

Putin warns the US against socialism

By Pat Dollard

Russian Prime Minister Vladamir Putin has said the US should take a lesson from the pages of Russian history and not exercise “excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state’s omnipotence”.

“In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state’s role absolute,” Putin said during a speech at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated.”

Sounding more like Barry Goldwater than the former head of the KGB, Putin said, “Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors, and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.”

So you want to be a communist

So you want to be a communist

By Donald Hank

Many conservative pundits today are trying desperately to warn their fellow Americans that Barack Obama has been linked to various far-left organizations, seems to have been reared by a convinced communist, and has ties to the far-left organization ACORN and with leftist terrorists like William Ayers.

Most of these pundits seem to be going on the assumption that, like us older Americans, people today have a basic knowledge of what communism (or socialism, the first step toward communism) actually is, at least enough to fear it.

But, in view of the enormous resurgence of the Left in America, I am not so sure the word “communism” raises so many eyebrows today.

Therefore, it is probably necessary to remind the reader what a communist state looks like from the inside.

I spent a summer in the USSR in the early 70s studying Russian under the auspices of the Council on International Educational Exchange, and a little later, about 4 months in Poland traveling on my own, and here are some things I observed: Continue reading

The crisis with Obama’s footprints all over it

The manufactured crisis

By Donald Hank

Joan Battey, a good friend of Laigle’s Forum, writes:

James Simpson, a former White House economist, has just published “Barack Obama & the Strategy of Manufactured Crisis” – on AmericanThinker.com at http://www.americanthinker.com/ 2008/09/barack_obama_and_the_strategy.html

Listen to this Interview of James Simpson, by Sandy Rios, Tuesday 9/30 – WYLL 1160AM, Chicago, IL
From http://www.culturecampaign.com/culturecorner.aspx

Further documentation connecting the dots of all the neo-Marxists who have invested in the development of Barack Obama may be found on discoverthenetworks.org

Please take the necessary time to read each linked article and listen to the Sandy Rios program, plus this one: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,432501,00.html.

You need to know the facts and draw the conclusion. To put it plainly, numerous activists on the Left have been orchestrating this crisis and others yet to come in order to introduce full-blown socialism in the US. Once they perpetrate a crisis and impoverish us, for example, as they did with welfare, they immediately blame free-market capitalism. If enough Americans believe this lie, the American experiment is finished and it will have failed! It is as simple as that. If you are not sure whether we need the Obama Kool-Aid or not, please read all the links above and listen to the Sandy Rios program linked there. Take notes. There is nothing more important on your agenda today than this.

Meanwhile, I just received an email from Sen. Arlen Specter in response to an email of mine regarding his vote in favor of the bailout.

According to this email, one of the details of the bill was as follows:

A first-time homebuyer tax credit of up to $7,500 is included in the Act, which serves as the equivalent to an interest-free loan to be paid back over 15 years.

For those wondering what a tax credit is, it is much more than a deduction. It is a give-away. It is free money – at taxpayer expense.

My email in response:

Hello Senator,

With all due respect, it is the kind of give-away scheme you describe that got us into the mess in the first place. How could you support such a scam? You write, in all seriousness:

A first-time homebuyer tax credit of up to $7,500 is included in the Act, which serves as the equivalent to an interest-free loan to be paid back over 15 years.

First, most of the bailout package rewards Fanny Mae and other lenders for bad decisions and rewards the government for forcing lenders to give out loans at subprime rates, with no documentation required (no job needed!), no down payment, etc.

I understand that the entire bailout package will cost every American $10,000. So to save some people $7,500, we honest people who do NOT default on mortgages or buy things we can’t afford, must now give up $10,000? Even the person who gets the $7,500 will have to pay $10,000. AND home prices will rise accordingly, as they did during the last scam under the Community Reinvestment Act.

With all due respect for your office sir, have you ever stopped to think that this will only exacerbate the current crisis not only through the enormous tax burden but by artificially raising home prices? No one will benefit, except Washington.

Sincerely,

Don Hank

You can easily understand why a lender would want to know if the borrower has a job and can make enough money to repay a loan. But let me also briefly explain why banks have always, in every country in the world, throughout history, required down payments.

Lenders learned centuries ago that when they lent people money for housing without requiring a down payment, this is what often happened when economic conditions worsened:

1-The home prices in that area fell.

2-At the same time, the lender lost his job and couldn’t pay

3-When the lender foreclosed and tried to resell the house to recoup some of his cash, he lost money, often as much as 20%, because the house sold at a loss in the softer market.

That is the reason for the down payment. The reason lenders stopped requiring down payments in the last part of the 20th century was a series of Democrat-supported enactments, including the Community Reinvestment Act (under Carter), which was strengthened under Clinton and Bush, whose HUDs required Fanny Mae to drop or weaken all the safeguards enumerated above (down payment requirements, documentation of employment, etc). To pass this dangerous legislation, the Democrats claimed that minorities were being denied mortgages on the basis of race, when in fact, the minority communities statistically simply did not have enough people with good credit, good jobs and jobs to justify as many mortgages as the Democrats called for. It was – and is – politically incorrect to mention these inconvenient truths. People who now demand fairness in lending are called racists. Community organizers like ACORN, a group that worked hand-in-hand with Barack Obama, used strong-arm tactics to shake down banks and force them to give mortgages to people who could not afford them and then when the loans were, inevitably, foreclosed, the same people who caused the crisis blamed the banks. That way, they could blame the free market and make gullible people believe that America needs socialism, when in fact what we desperately need is less socialism.

Leftist activists are coming out of the shadows and openly gloating that America is now a socialist country. Many naïve people actually believe that socialism will lead to prosperity, even though this system destroyed the Soviet Union, China (under Mao), North Korea and many others and impoverished Europe, where families, even professionals, can hardly scrape by any more.

If you want to salvage even a remnant of the free market system that made America great, you need to widely forward the above links and talk to as many people as you can between now and the election and tell them what you have learned.

And pray that God will spare us from what appears to be an impending disaster manufactured by the Left.

This post is for activists.

Do not delay in contacting your congress person by both phone and email today. The bailout vote is coming up in the Congress either today or tomorrow and it will determine whether America continues to be a free-market economy.

First let me tell you something important about the “need” for the bailout.

I just called my bank and asked the loan officer if they could give me a loan to refinance my home.

When I identified myself and said how much I needed and how much the home is worth, they said “sure.”

I said: “the news media are all telling us no banks are lending money.”

He said “we only lend to people we know can pay us back. We don’t give ‘no doc’ loans, so we have never had problems with lending money.”

He told me the rate would be 7.3%.

I said: In other words, we have been scammed by the politicians and news casters? In other words, the only banks that don’t lend are the ones that have no doc and no down-payment policies requiring them to lend to people who probably can’t pay? Continue reading

Bush: Free market is best — under government control, that is

Bush: Free market is best – under government control, that is

By Donald Hank

President Bush’s speech of 9/05/08 gave various reasons for the recent financial crash involving, among others, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac. But he overlooked one reason — the underlying one.

He attributed the crash to a large influx of money to US banks and financial institutions, which in turn made it easy for people to get credit, leading them to borrow for cars, college tuition, homes and so on. He said “Easy credit combined with the faulty assumption that home values would continue to rise, led to excesses and bad decisions.”

Ok, let’s stop right there and analyze this. The last sentence indicates all this was your fault, you irresponsible borrower.

But was it?

American realtors had seen a crisis on the horizon as early as July 15, 2004, when the National Association of Realtors sent a letter to HUD expressing their concerns that a proposed rule to increase the percentage of mortgages to “underserved” populations (minorities) could create precisely the kind of market destabilization that led to the recent meltdown.

What was this rule? Under Clinton, Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac were obligated to serve at least 21% of the “underserved” communities with mortgages. Under Bush, the percentage more than doubled. In reality this translated into providing mortgages to a significant number of families who simply could not afford them, at sub-prime rates and often with no down payment required. For many, foreclosure was a foregone conclusion at the outset. It was affirmative action for borrowers and worked just as well as the affirmative action in colleges, where minorities were assured of admission under diluted requirements, and almost equally assured of failing after the first year. Like welfare, which harmed the inner cities by making out of wedlock births a lucrative business, leading inevitably to an astronomical incarceration rate for blacks, it ensured failure for minority home-owners, making ownership a revolving door. For many in the “underserved” community, it was: “welcome homeowner,” followed immediately by “get out, deadbeat”!

This is really the essence of “compassionate conservatism,” which is a euphemism for a planned economy. Thus the people blaming the crisis on lack of regulation had actually made and enforced regulations that brought down the financial markets. Regulation was in fact the disease pathogen, not the remedy.

Bush goes on: “I’m a strong believer in free enterprise, so my natural instinct is to oppose government intervention. I believe companies that make bad decisions should be allowed to go out of business.”

He then explains that this current crisis is an exception and describes the “distressing scenario” that must be avoided at all expense — your expense, that is:

More banks could fail, including some in your community. The stock market would drop even more, which would reduce the value of your retirement account. The value of your home could plummet. Foreclosures would rise dramatically.

But the banks that would fail would be the ones most heavily invested in the “compassionate conservatism” that you promoted through your HUD rules, Mr. Bush. That would be a very good thing. They should fail. They embraced the false utopian ideal of “social justice” at the expense of self-regulation of markets.

“And if you own a business or a farm, you would find it harder and more expensive to get credit. More businesses would close their doors, and millions of Americans could lose their jobs.”

Farmers and small businesses running thriftily will be the ones to survive. That too would be good, if only because it would enable the market to punish the foolish investors and reward the wise ones. And that in turn would serve as a useful example to the next generation of business people. If people became unemployed, they would be reminded that politicians who push snake-oil schemes with names like “compassionate conservatism” (or for that matter, who excuse illegal immigrants by saying things like “they are good people looking for a better way of life”) ultimately result in lost jobs.

“Even if you have good credit history, it would be more difficult for you to get the loans you need to buy a car or send your children to college. And, ultimately, our country could experience a long and painful recession.”

Mr. Bush, it should be difficult to get loans. They aren’t for everyone. They are for people with good credit, regardless of race, color or creed. Period. But even so, how is the taxpayers experiencing an unwieldly debt any better than Americans experiencing a “long and painful recession”?

David Walker, the ex US Controller General, predicted that over the next 75 years the gap between what has been promised for entitlement programs like social security and Medicare and how much in dedicated revenue is likely to be received (e.g., through payroll taxes and premiums) is $38.8 trillion. Walker calls these “implicit exposures,” and says they represent the money we would need today, invested at Treasury rates, to pay for future entitlements. This gap represents over $128,000 for every man, woman, and child in the United States.

Peter Sims writes:

According to the GAO, the total fiscal burden over the next 75 years represents $400,000 for every full-time worker in the United States and $440,000 per household.

The bipartisan bailout plan is typical Bush double-talk. While paying lip service to the free market at the beginning of his speech, Bush sounds like a true leftwing revolutionary when his alter ego chimes in:

“Earlier this year, Secretary Paulson proposed a blueprint that would modernize our financial regulations. For example, the Federal Reserve would be authorized to take a closer look at the operations of companies across the financial spectrum and ensure that their practices do not threaten overall financial stability.”

In other words, the free market is fine, as long as it is under government control. That is why both parties can reach across the aisle so easily and into your pocketbook.

If McCain signs on to this plan and manages to somehow get elected, look for 4 more years of disastrous Bushonomics posing as free market principles.

If Obama gets elected, look for the same, but called by its real name: socialism.

If you agree that America deserves better than this devil’s bargain, contact your lawmaker at the site linked below and tell them to vote AGAINST the bailout:

PS: For those who think I am making this up, here is the Bush Administration’s HUD site and a quote from that site promoting the “zero downpayment” initiative:

 http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/09/20040902-5.html

  • “Zero-Downpayment Initiative. In his FY 2005 budget, the President proposed the Zero-Downpayment Initiative. Preliminary projections indicate this Initiative would help about 150,000 homebuyers in the first year alone. This proposal would eliminate the statutory requirement of a minimum three percent down payment for FHA-insured single-family mortgages for first-time homebuyers. “

For months now, you have been reading, both at Laigle’s Forum and at WorldNetDaily (the rest of the media were silent), of the irrational crackdown against homeschoolers in Germany. Some of you even participated in email actions, contacting German officials and pointing out that Germany is the only country in Europe that has banned homeschooling.

One of the persecuted families had been the subject of a witch hunt and had had their children snatched for 7 months on all kinds of wild trumped up charges, but at bottom, because they were homeschoolers, who are routinely treated like terrorists there (think what Nancy Pelosi would do here if she could!). Little has changed since Hitler’s time, except that one atheistic Darwin-based ideology – Nationalsozialismus – has been traded for another similar one – socialism.

    Dear Mr. Völk,

Naturally even you try to fulfill your tasks as a judge according to your best knowledge and conscience, in order to treat everybody in accordance to the principles of our constitutional law.

Our nation is lucky to have God’s commandments as the fundamental basis of our law. Praise to the judge who administers the law well.

On September 25th you’ll have to decide whether the 5 children of Mr and Mrs Gorber, who have been living in child and youth foster homes since January 16th, will be allowed to return to their parents. The youngest (in January), David, who was 2 years old, was finally allowed back home some weeks ago, after having been separated from his beloved parents and the siblings who remained at home, for almost 7 months. We’re very grateful to you, that you finally let him return home.

What was the reason for sending these six children into (child and youth) foster homes? I would like to comment on this question – after questioning both parents -separately apart from each other- for many hours, and after looking into the court-file.

Mrs. Gorber was pregnant with their 9th child and had suffered from pregnancy diabetes since the beginning of January, which affected her psychological well-being. She therefore spent a few weeks in hospital.

In her husbands absence, on the 15th January, while he was visiting her there, 20 policemen and 9 child welfare officers turned up at their home, surrounded the entire area where they live, closed off the street, as if they had to catch terrorists, and took all Gorber children under 18 years with them, even though the oldest daughter, 21 year old Miriam, assured them, that she had learned to run the household and take care of the children. She received the reponse that she wasn’t her father’s housekeeper and should go to work outside the home.

They grabbed 7 year old Rebecka, who was screaming with fear, and dragged her by her upper body over the yard and shoved her into one of the cars along with her siblings. Two year old David also screamed, holding onto Miriam and not letting her go until they reached the foster home and he got tired and gave in. Miriam and her 20 year old brother Benjamin, were allowed to return home, as they were no longer minors.

The father is a self-employed carpenter, who works from home; therefore even in the mothers absense the younger siblings were never without somebody watching over them. The children had learned to work together, with the parents as a team, to do the daily chores. As a result of the co-operation, homeschooling was not a huge burden for the mother to oversee.

The written notice advising of the children’s commitment into foster homes was left on the kitchen table for the father, signed by you, Mr Völk. A policeman, who lived in the neighbourhood, had told the Child Welfare Authority that the father was psychologically unstable, and there now existed, in the mother’s absence, the danger of a mass homocide – ie that the father could posibly murder all of his children and lastly kill himself.

A Medicine Worse than the Sickness

Dorothy Sayers in her essay titled “Problem Picture” presents a perspective of a Christian writing in England during World War Two. I would like to draw a few statements from this essay:

“There is one vast human experience that confronts us so formidably that we cannot pretend to overlook it. There is no solution to death.” … “The spiritual and mental energy that we expend upon resenting the inevitably of death is as much wasted as that which we from time to time have expended on attempts to solve the problem of perpetual motion. Further, this irrational preoccupation curiously hampers us in dealing with such a practical question as that of the possibility of war. It encourages us to look on the evil of war as consisting, first and foremost, that it kills a great many people.” … “Because of that, we would not risk war, for right or justice, or even in the hope of preserving peace. We threw down our arms [after WW1], crying ‘No More War!’, and so delivered up Europe.”

I am also writing from the perspective of a Christian. As I survey the landscape today I believe we can see that the sort of attitude that Sayers decried back in World War 2 is still alive and well with us today. When I hear calls like “Support the Troops- Bring them Home,” I recognize that the speaker believes that the very worst thing that can happen in life is to die. We must ask ourselves how many tyrants are in power today, stifling their populace by whatever means that they have, because free men and women can’t bring themselves to assert their understanding of what is right and what is wrong for fear that war might break out.

That is the story of Rwanda in the 90s. It is today’s story in Sudan. This article is not about trying to lay out arguments for war but rather to expound on the principle at work in Sayer’s statement. That principle is: In the face of evils that will always be with us, we shouldn’t try to avoid them, stall them, or overcome them in such a way that is also evil or sets the stage for something more horrific.

I can think of other applications of this principle and when we are in a political season I think it is wise to consider the matter, especially those of us who are Christians.

Perhaps another illustration from history should be presented. Let us take the problem of poverty. Poverty has always been with us and though it may offend some to point it out, it will always remain with us in the face of all our efforts. Poverty, like war, and like death, is a thing we should be concerned about. Can we put our finger on an attempt to deal with poverty that not only was worse than the problem to be solved but also brought more poverty?

I believe we can point to the rise of Communism as a case in point. Communism surged because of the vast amount of people feeling the dull weight of exploitation upon them. The solution was to take from the ‘haves’ and give to the ‘have nots.’ This was done violently but in the end many of the ‘have nots’ still had not and hundreds of millions perished in an effort to enforce ‘equality’ on a national scale.

Communist countries became the poorest countries on the planet. Only by softening their principles, as in China and Vietnam, did they manage to stay afloat at all. With all of the efforts of the Chinese to stamp out the problem of economic disparities does anyone believe for a minute that there are no poor people in China?

Now, in America there are people who would like to take from the ‘haves’ and give to the ‘have nots.’ Is it ever right to take what belongs to someone else just to give it to another? Do we know from history what kind of outcomes might result if such a venture was carried out in its full strength? We do. Is there a way to take poverty serious while not offering ‘rob the rich’ as the solution? I think so.

There will always be problems – death, war, poverty, conflict, sickness, etc. Some people take the attitude that these problems must be fought at any cost and tend to elect people who will fight them at any cost, oblivious to the fact that in tending to one problem they are creating another. In my view, the ideal candidate will take the problems seriously but will be aware of the law of unintended consequences and try to keep government out of the way of good citizens at work on those problems at the local level.

But it might be argued that there are some problems that are so big that they can only be handled by an institution as massive as our government. I don’t believe there are as many as we might think. I am not arguing that we do nothing about the problems of society but that we do so in a way that doesn’t do even worse damage. If not the government, then, who do I propose tackle these issues?

Quite simply, I believe the Christian church itself has what it takes to handle many of these social problems. I fear, however, that many Christians have gravitated towards solving such problems with government. This, in my view, is shameful. Attending to the concerns of our fellow man is a task given to us by Christ. He didn’t give it to us so that we could delegate it off to bureaucrats, no matter how well meaning we think those people are.

I wonder how many other issues that we Christians take seriously could be largely managed if instead of trying to resolve issues legislatively we devoted our time, energy, and resources to dealing with these problems as they arise in our own local communities. A litany of examples comes to my mind. I am not saying that we don’t work legislatively. I am saying we don’t put our hope in the government and that we don’t give up duties that rightly belong to us.

In this political season, I will be looking for a candidate who trusts the people themselves to address the big issues of our time. I fear that even if we elect such a candidate, the Christian community would not capitalize on the opportunity such an approach will afford. So, no matter what happens in the next election, there is still plenty we Christians can do… and should do. We can start now.
